3D Print Template Orientation Technology: New Hope for Cancer Patients

On December 9, 2015, Feng Tiehong, director of the Minimally Invasive Interventions Department of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Cancer Hospital, and his team used digital medical 3D printed template-guided technology to implement radioactive particles for a patient who had recurrence and liver metastases after 11 months of colorectal cancer surgery. Implantation therapy, this technique is the first case in patients with liver metastases in the region, and the patient is currently recovering well.

So, what is radioactive particle implantation therapy? How to implement minimally invasive interventional surgery in combination with 3D printing template guiding technology? What are the advantages of this treatment compared to traditional surgery? Which tumor patients are this method suitable for? What are the precautions after surgery? Can you enjoy medical insurance? The author interviewed Dr. Feng Tiehong.

In recent years, the Minimally Invasive Intervention Department of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Cancer Hospital has implemented an average of 100 cases of radioactive particle implantation therapy every year.

It is understood that this treatment is a male patient in his 50s, who was originally in advanced stage of colorectal cancer. After traditional surgery, his condition was repeated and he was transferred to the liver. In the case of other hospitals with poor radiotherapy and chemotherapy, he came to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Cancer Hospital for treatment.

3D Print Template Orientation Technology: New Hope for Cancer Patients

On December 9, 2015, doctors were undergoing surgery for patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer.

Feng Tiehong said: "Before the operation, our hospital provided CT scan data of patients' lesions and inter-tissue radiotherapy measurement and puncture path to Beijing University of Technology. They obtained 3D suitable molds by using 3D printing technology . The mold showed the overall shape of the tumor according to the outer surface of the surface. During the operation, the doctor placed the 3D-shaped mold on the surface of the patient's body marked in advance, and used the digital device and the 3D-shaped mold to puncture the patient and implant the radioactive particles into the lesion."

According to reports, in recent years, the Minimally Invasive Intervention Department of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Cancer Hospital has implemented an average of 100 cases of radioactive particle implantation treatment every year. Since August 2014, using digital medical 3D printing template-oriented technology developed by Beijing University of Technology, radioactive particle implantation or inter-tissue radiotherapy has been successfully implemented for nearly 30 cancer patients. The surgical effect is much better than the traditional method. In 2014, the first lung cancer operation was performed, and in 2015, the first liver cancer operation was performed. Others include kidney cancer, prostate, tongue cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer and other head and neck cancer elimination operations.
