For the first time, scientists discovered a bacterium called "Candidate Door TM6". This bacterium is widespread in the water environment, but it cannot be cultivated in the laboratory. With the exception of its iconic 16S gene, the scientific community knows almost nothing about its life activity characteristics. Because of this, the "candidate door TM6" bacteria is called "life dark matter".
Researchers at the Craig Venter Institute in the United States reported in a new issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that they used automated technology that can capture the genome from a single cell and drained the biofilm from the sink in a hospital lounge TM6 bacteria were collected on the site, and the genome of the bacteria was successfully reconstructed using DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) splicing method.
Sequencing results indicate that this bacterium cannot produce amino acids and may need to reside in biofilms or inside single-celled microorganisms. However, it is unclear whether TM6 bacteria are harmful to humans.
The researchers said that the research results may help to cultivate and study similar microorganisms, so as to further understand their ecological characteristics and functions.
