Advantech reagents-scientists develop new cell printing technology with cell survival rate close to 100%

According to the physicist organization network reported on February 10, researchers at the Houston Methodist Research Institute in the United States have developed a technology that can print live cells on any surface and almost any shape, and almost all cells in the whole process. Can still survive. New technology is like ancient Chinese woodblock printing and now children's rubber stamp toys, which are different from inkjet printing methods. The research results were published in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Institute of Nanomedicine, Qin Lidong, said that this method can produce a 2D cell array in just half an hour, and the printed cells are close to 5 microns (most animal cells are 10 to 30 microns wide) And allows the use of many different types of cells. The researchers named this technique batch cell printing (BloC printing).

The inkjet printing method has basically succeeded in printing 2D and 3D cells, but sometimes only half of the cells survive the printing process. Qin Lidong said: "Inkjet-based cell printing will cause many cells to be damaged or die. Cell printing is mainly used for drug development and tissue regeneration, cell function and inter-cell communication research, which requires that cells can only be alive. It works. And when the cell exits the inkjet nozzle, it only has a survival rate of 50% to 80%. In our BloC printing, nearly 100% of the printed cells are still alive. "

BloC printing guides living cells into a hook-shaped trap in a silicone mold by manipulating microfluidics. The flow of cells follows a row of molds, over the trapped cells to the next available slot, and finally creates a row of cell units, forming a grid line. During the creation of the mold, the position and spacing of the traps, as well as the channel shape formed by the passage of cells, can be configured by themselves. When the mold is removed, the living cells remain and adhere to the growth medium or other substrate to form as required.

The research team tested BloC printing with cancerous cells and nerve cells. By arranging metastatic cancer cells in a grid, they found that the metastatic potential of cancer cells could be easily identified. Qin Lidong said that this may help early diagnosis of cancer.

They also printed a grid of brain cells to give cells time to form synapses. Qin Lidong said: "The cell connection we created may be very useful for future research on neuronal signal transduction and axon regeneration. Such work may help to understand Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases."

Qin Lidong also said: "It is too early to predict the market cost of BloC printing. At present, we only know that the cost of BloC printing mold materials is about $ 1. After the mold is manufactured and delivered, the researchers only need a syringe and a live cell culture dish And the hand of steady operation. And the cost of the cell inkjet printer needs to be 1 to 200,000 dollars. "

Qin Lidong said that BloC printing can be combined with molecular printing for many types of drug screening, RNA interference, and molecular-cell interaction studies. This technology has great potential in the future. However, despite the high cell survival rate of this type of printing, inkjet printing is still relatively fast, and BloC printing cannot print multilayer structures like inkjet printing.
