The operation of OCR software seems simple, but there are many skills, and mastering its operation skills is very important for improving the recognition capability of OCR software.


OCR Technology:

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is short for OCR. It uses scanners to input numbers, symbols, and texts into the computer in the form of graphical information, and then the corresponding software performs recognition processing. Each character on the manuscript becomes the correct standard. The code allows the computer to automate the entry of characters.

The basic processing of OCR can be divided into three steps: scan input, automatic identification, and finishing output. 1 The original document input on the scanner is only one page of graphic information. OCR is divided into two categories: printed text recognition and handwritten text recognition. Because each person's handwriting is different, even if the same person has different handwriting due to different occasions and times, it will cause great difficulty in automatically recognizing the handwritten text. Therefore, the accuracy rate of the handwritten manuscript OCR recognition has not yet reached a practical application. Degree.


The general process of scan identification:

1. Connect the scanner and the computer Connect the scanner and the computer through the data transmission line. The interface of the general scanner is the SISC interface or the USB interface.

2. Zoom preview and adjust image sharpness In order to achieve the best recognition effect, the minimum requirement for inputting originals during scanning is clear. 3. The tilt correction of the original As the recognition principle of OCR is based on the character mode, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the original is horizontal or not. In the specific implementation process, you can use the "automatic tilt correction" function to solve.

4. Pre-processing of originals Since the condition of originals is very different, some pre-processing is required before recognition. First, the noise and the image in the original should be removed. If the original contains an image, the OCR text segmentation will be affected and the OCR will not be recognized. When there is a column in the document, the identification range needs to be manually set. Only in this way can the continuity of the recognition result be ensured.

5. Choose the appropriate identification method In the specific identification, should pay attention to whether the original is horizontal or vertical, so choose the correct "arrangement format" in order to maintain its correspondence.

6. Start identification After confirming the above steps, you can press the "Identify" button. After the recognition is completed, the system enters the original proofreading interface.

7. Original proofreading Generally speaking, OCR will display blue for text that cannot be completely determined. Please confirm it with the user. However, it is worth noting that there may be errors in areas where there is no indication of an error. You can add and modify the required text in this interface through the text input method provided by the operating system.

8. Original copying The collated originals are generally saved in plain text format for easy editing of layout software calls.


Scanning identification should pay attention to the problem:

1. Original processing The quality of the original directly affects the quality of the scanned image, and it will directly affect the accuracy of the final OCR. For example, if the newspaper is properly processed before scanning, the final OCR effect may change. For low quality manuscripts such as newspapers, it is better to use a copying machine for copying before scanning. When copying, attention should be paid to adjust the contrast and brightness to make the background white, and the text color remains black. After the copy of the newspaper, OCR's accuracy has improved significantly.

2. Scanning Techniques (1)Be sure to place the original document in the scanner. Do not tilt it. Otherwise, the scanned document will be tilted and the OCR software will not recognize it correctly. For originals that cannot be straightened, they need to be corrected using the "automatic tilt correction" or "manual correction" function. If the document is slightly tilted during scanning, it can be corrected by using the “tilt correction” function of the OCR software.

When you scan the book, you should pay more attention to it. Because the spine tilt will cause the text in the middle part to be deformed, the book spine must be flattened before scanning.

(2) The original type should be set to line drawing, and the threshold value should be set to a larger value, generally set to 40% to 75%. If the original is clear, set the threshold to 40% to 55%; if the original is of poor quality, set the threshold to 60% to 75%.

It is also important to select the appropriate resolution. In general, it is appropriate to use a resolution of 200 to 300 dpi for scanning. If the resolution is too high, it does not make much sense and only increases the scan time.

(3) In most cases, scanned image files cannot be directly OCR-processed because the image files often have taint-interference recognition rates. The commonly used image processing software, such as Photoshop, ACDSee, etc. are all very effective. If there are fewer stains, you can use the eraser tool in the above software to wipe the stain off. However, if the quality of the original is poor and the original is full of blemishes, large areas of blemishes can be eliminated by adjusting the contrast and brightness of the image. Even if the scanned image file is not smudged, the contrast and brightness can be appropriately adjusted, which can increase the contrast between the text and the background, and improve the recognition accuracy of the OCR software.

In particular, it should be noted that no matter which image processing method is used, the continuity of text strokes must be ensured. Once there is a situation where there are missing strokes, the accuracy of recognition will be seriously affected.

3. Layout Analysis

If the original to be identified contains multiple fonts or text in multiple fonts, a layout analysis is required. The fonts with the same font size and font are divided into one block so that the OCR software can correctly identify the original. In addition, when dividing a text block, a number appears above each text block. If it is necessary to adjust the order of recognizing text, it must be set beforehand when the block is defined.
