New Process for Direct Synthesis of Propylene from Ethylene in Japan

The Institute of Resources Chemistry at Tokyo Institute of Technology recently announced the development of a new catalyst reaction process for the direct synthesis of propylene from ethylene. The new process is based on the use of nickel-based porous nickel bodies as catalysts for nickel ions. Using a solid catalyst reaction process, ethylene can continuously produce propylene and ethylene as raw materials. As long as additional processes are added to the ethylene plant, it is possible to greatly increase propylene production. If this new process can be applied to actual production, it can solve the propylene raw material needed for production and ensure ethylene/propylene balance. At present, several petrochemical companies have participated in this study.
