Japan Bell Spins successfully developed a superabsorbent fiber for food packaging under the trade name "BELUANS", which has been officially used as a food packaging material and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
According to reports, a non-woven sheet made of such highly water-absorbing and highly hygroscopic fibers absorbs 50 ml of water per gram, which is about 5 times higher than that of the original pulp sheet, and can withstand 150°C. Even high pressure can maintain its moisture.
