Curator Zhu Xiaojie: International furniture design industry is welcoming "Spring in Asia"

For the Chinese furniture industry and design circles who are eager to break through and are confused, this time, in Milan, are they self-entertainment, or have they really received the attention and praise of their international counterparts? Can Zhu Xiaojie and his friends go further with "Contemporary Chinese Furniture"?

FT: This time your exhibition participated in the Milan Design Week, which was tested by professionals and consumers around the world. How do you feel? What is the feedback from the audience during the exhibition?

Zhu Xiaojie: I am very happy and I feel very meaningful. We can tell more than 70 pieces of works from designers in southeastern and northwestern China, men, women and children, different identities and different regions, through chairs to tell their daily lives, telling about our real life and the Chinese people’s history. Aesthetics: It is really beautiful, natural is beautiful, good is beautiful. I hope that through the understanding of Chinese designers, let the world understand the real China.

The audience was very surprised and kept taking photos and discussing with the camera. The local mainstream newspaper "Italian Evening Post" used a full-page report on the exhibition, the title is "How close to China."

On the night of the opening night, there were crowds of people. The “copying big country” in the impression of an international furniture colleague suddenly took out so many chairs with rich oriental colors, which really surprised the western audience.

FT: What do you think is the highlight of this year's Milan show and what trends have you seen?

Zhu Xiaojie: This Milan exhibition has produced such an advertisement: "Milan, it is none of you." Indeed, the performance of the pavilion, the family is wonderful, it is difficult to assess who is tall and who is low, because the style is different. In general, “environmental protection” may become a trend and trend.

FT: What do you think are the competitive elements of the Italian and European furniture industry ? What is the evaluation of the function and significance of the international platform of Milan Exhibition?

Zhu Xiaojie: profound design skills, excellent production quality, long history background, media attention and national pride and identity.

Milan Exhibition is an international exchange platform. Whether it is sunny, cloudy or rainy, the exhibition period is always crowded and popular. Without popularity, the exhibition is meaningless. Not only in the pavilion, the entire city of Milan is full of exhibition atmosphere, really "Milan, not you."

FT: What is your comment on the performance of Asia and China at the Milan exhibition this year?

Zhu Xiaojie: There is no comment. China was rejected by the Salon Exhibition. The reason is that Chinese furniture cannot represent China because there is no Chinese lifestyle and tradition (meaning “copy”). I can hardly see some brands in Asia and feel helpless. This "sit down" exhibition was a peripheral exhibition at the Milan Design Week. Finally, I wanted to tell Milan: "China is a copying power" is a prejudice.

FT: We know that you have participated in the “World Seeing” project. What do you think is the significance of discovering the cultural traditions of the country for contemporary furniture design ?

Zhu Xiaojie: The “World Sees” National Crafts Tour is a public welfare project of the United Nations. I was invited as a furniture designer. The purpose is about the protection and development of Chinese minority culture. My research topic is Tibetan furniture. I found that no piece of furniture, like Tibetan furniture, preserved the ethnic craftsmanship and traditional way of life so thoroughly. If there are people in each region who learn to enjoy the legacy left by our ancestors and learn to integrate these things into modern life, more traditional lifestyles and ethnic handicrafts can be preserved and passed down. We will not lose our national identity, because only the nationality is the world.

FT: The original research said that the international design community is welcoming the "Asian era". What do you think?

Zhu Xiaojie: In the old saying, "Thirty years of Hedong, thirty years of Hexi", the times are working in a round-the-clock manner. The flower blossoms must fall, and the tides will also fall. The West is full of vigor and the East will have this day. What's more, furniture is good at the people of the East, but we, the unfilial children, have lost their traditions. But the genes are still there, and it’s still too late to pick them up. I dare not say that the international design community is welcoming the "Asian era", but I can certainly say that the international furniture design industry is welcoming "Spring in Asia."
