Architects will build the world's largest 3D printed building in Amsterdam

OFWeek 3D Printing News: Since its emergence, 3D printing technology has been regarded as a groundbreaking innovation that is shaping the future. Scientists have already used this technology to create items such as guns, prosthetics, and even cars. Recently, a group of Dutch architects has set an ambitious goal: to build a fully 3D-printed house in Amsterdam using only 3D printing techniques. Located along the canals of Amsterdam, the project aims to construct the largest building ever made with 3D printing technology. The initiative was launched earlier this year by DUS, a local architectural firm. If you're interested, you can contribute as little as 2.5 euros to support the development of this unique housing project. The company uses a custom-built 3D printer called KamerMaker, which translates to "Builder-room" in Dutch. This machine can be placed inside a waste container and has a maximum size of 6 meters. Similar to desktop 3D printers, it extrudes thermoplastic materials layer by layer. In addition to large structures, it can also print smaller objects like benches. Each room is printed as a separate module and then assembled like Lego bricks. These modules can be stacked on top of each other to form the final structure. The building is expected to resemble a traditional Dutch canal house and will take approximately three years to complete. Once finished, it will serve as a public design museum, with all 12 rooms dedicated to research on various types of 3D-printed buildings. According to Stephen Ervin from Harvard University's manufacturing lab, scaling up 3D printing projects can bring unexpected challenges. "What works well on a small scale or in a lab may not function as expected when applied to larger structures," he said. "There could be many technical issues that arise during the process." This innovative project not only highlights the potential of 3D printing in construction but also invites public participation and engagement. It’s a bold step forward in the evolution of architecture and sustainable building methods.
