Xiaoku is taking you on a journey to the Great God. Today, I'd like to introduce you to Xiaoluo – Down.
Down is a natural insulating material found under the feathers of geese and ducks. It comes in two main forms: velvet and flakes. Velvet refers to the soft, fine layer of fluff found beneath the belly of a goose or duck, while flakes are larger, coarser pieces that often contain small stalks. In terms of softness and fluffiness, velvet is far superior to flakes.
To produce high-quality down products, the raw down must go through several processing steps, including dust removal, washing, dehydration, drying, cooling, and classification. Only after these processes can it be used to make down-filled items such as jackets, duvets, and pillows.

The key to down’s warmth lies in its ability to trap air. The fluffy structure of down allows it to expand, creating a layer of still air around the body. Since air is a poor conductor of heat, this trapped air helps retain body warmth. Each down feather has thousands of tiny filaments that interlock, forming a dense, insulating layer. In fact, one ounce of down contains about 2 million filaments, which work together to provide excellent thermal insulation.

One of the most important indicators of down quality is its fill power, also known as loft. Fill power measures how much space an ounce of down occupies in cubic inches. For example, if an ounce of down takes up 600 cubic inches, it has a fill power of 600. The higher the fill power, the more air the down can trap, resulting in better insulation and warmth. This is why high-fill-power down is considered superior for cold-weather gear.

So, when it comes to down products, three key factors determine their warmth:
1. **Amount of down** – the total weight of the down used in the product.
2. **Down ratio** – the percentage of down compared to feathers.
3. **Fill power** – the volume of air the down can hold, which directly affects its insulating performance.
This also answers a common question: Is goose down warmer than duck down? While goose down is typically larger and has a higher fill power, the actual warmth depends more on the fill power and down ratio rather than the source alone.

In addition, a good down product requires a high-quality shell fabric. The anti-down fabric (also called a down-proof fabric) ensures that the down stays inside the garment while allowing for breathability. This prevents feathers from escaping and maintains the product’s comfort and performance over time.

Whether you're choosing a jacket, a duvet, or a pillow, understanding these factors will help you make an informed decision and get the best warmth and comfort possible.
