Down is a natural insulating material found under the feathers of waterfowl like geese and ducks. It comes in two main forms: velvet and flakes. Velvet refers to the soft, fine layer of fluff found under the belly of a goose or duck, while flakes are coarser, feather-like structures that often contain small stalks. In terms of softness and fluffiness, velvet is far superior to flakes.
To make high-quality down products, raw down must go through several processes, including dust removal, washing, dehydration, drying, cooling, and classification. Only after these steps can it be used to create warm and comfortable down-filled items.

The science behind down’s warmth lies in its ability to trap air. The fluffy structure of down creates a layer of still air around the body, which acts as an insulator because air is a poor conductor of heat. Thanks to its three-dimensional structure, down can "expand" and hold significantly more air than man-made materials of the same weight. For instance, one ounce of down contains about 2 million filaments that interlock to form a protective, insulating layer. This is what we refer to as fluffiness.

Fluffiness, also known as Fill Power, is a key measure of down quality. It represents the volume (in cubic inches) that one ounce (30 grams) of down occupies under specific conditions. If one ounce of down fills 600 cubic inches, its fill power is 600. The higher the fill power, the better the insulation, as it means the down can trap more air with less weight.

So, when it comes to warmth performance, there are three main factors to consider:
1. **Fill Weight** – the total amount of down used in a product.
2. **Fill Ratio** – the percentage of down versus feathers in the product.
3. **Fill Power** – the fluffiness and insulating capacity of the down.
This helps explain the long-standing debate between goose down and duck down. While goose down is generally considered to have higher fill power and better insulation, the quality of the down depends more on the processing and fill power rather than just the source.
