Let plastic bottle consumption really enter the green age

In recent months, people's debate about packaging and environmental protection seems to have intensified. Since packaging affects and even destroys the environment through all aspects of people's daily life, the packaging industry has become the focus of attention. Retailers are already eager to take corresponding measures to reduce the environmental impact of packaging.

To be truly environmentally friendly, it's not just as simple as choosing materials. Recent research by the Waste and Resource Action Group (WRAP) shows that British households discard about 6.7 tons of food each year, which is equivalent to one-third of their total food purchases throughout the year. As a result, it is not difficult to imagine that if there are no effective food preservation packages, then more food will be discarded due to spoilage. Although people do not use this as an indicator to measure the environmental performance of a package, it does affect the environment.

Retailers also found that the storage loss rate of grapes sold in bulk exceeds 5%. If sold in bags, the loss rate will decrease by 0.5%. If the basket is used outside the package to protect it, then the loss rate of the grapes will be reduced to 1.5%. In the same way, the shelf life of fresh cucumber or other products wrapped in plastic film will be extended by 5 days. In these areas, packaging that is often referred to as "excessive" actually has its value.

It is because of the protection and preservation of food that packaging has these values. Therefore, any enterprise must pay attention to the basic functions of packaging when designing and manufacturing packaging. Although people should achieve environmental protection in all aspects, environmental protection should not be at the expense of the original function of packaging. If a package does not meet the basic requirements for promotion, protection and preservation of the product, then its existence will be meaningless.

However, this is not to negate any new materials and technologies that can reduce the adverse effects of packaging on the environment. The basic functions and environmental performance of the packaging are very important. Material science and advanced production processes can provide end-users with packaging that is both environmentally friendly and meets the requirements of promotion, protection and more.

For example, biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) resins made from raw materials such as corn are described as "green" plastics. Although several of RPC's thermoforming systems can produce packaging for PLA materials, they still cannot meet market demand. RPC can currently only use this technology to produce thermoformed packages, and cannot use rigid molds to produce rigid containers.

In the past 20 years, plastic packaging recycling has achieved leaps and bounds. Thousands of consumers have actively joined the team that recycles plastic packaging. At the same time, the establishment of recycling packaging reprocessing plants has created a new concept, “Post-consumer recycled packaging” (PCR).

In this regard, the most attention is paid to post-consumer recycled PET. RPC has applied it to juice bottles and cans. These recycled packaging use only 25% to 40% of fresh polyester material, and the rest of the material is recycled PET resin. The energy consumption during the production process is also reduced by 70%.

In spite of this, people still have to consider the products and occasions that these products are suitable for. For example, since PET is not suitable for injection molding, if you want to use this method to produce any package containing recycled PET material, you have to find a solution to many problems: the package design needs to be more concise; the thickness of the bottle wall may need to reach the original Doubled, but this would increase the overall weight of the bottle by 260%; new molds are needed. In addition, other properties of injection-molded PET containers may also be affected, such as being unsuitable for easy opening and not being heated by microwaves.

On the other hand, the properties of recycled polypropylene (PP) materials do not meet the needs of packaging applications. This is mainly due to the fact that polypropylene packaging materials currently in use are of too many grades, and consumers are unable to identify various grades of packaging when recycling, resulting in unsatisfactory quality of recycled polypropylene materials. However, RPC Group Blackburn uses industrial recycled PP materials to produce contact lens cases, and the quality of this packaging material has reached the level of food contact. This example also shows that the plastics industry has been making continuous efforts to develop environmentally friendly packaging with good performance.

The best proof of this is lightweight packaging. The weight of RPC's latest generation of tamper-proof pots has dropped by 5%. Due to the reduction in energy consumption during production and transportation, the overall carbon footprint of packaging has also been reduced. This improved packaging can bring true green to the planet
