Kyushu space explains the basics of flammable gases

Flammable gases are hazardous substances that can be commonly found in industries such as petrochemicals, chemicals, and coal mining. These gases have the potential to ignite or explode under certain conditions, making them a serious safety concern. The most typical examples include alkanes like methane and propane. However, other gases—both organic and inorganic—such as benzene, carbon monoxide, and ammonia, can also be classified as flammable within specific concentration ranges. Despite this classification, many of these gases are not only flammable but also highly toxic. This dual hazard means that even at concentrations below the explosive limit, they can pose a significant threat to human health. For instance, carbon monoxide is a common gas found in urban environments, often used for heating purposes. While it is technically flammable, it becomes extremely dangerous at very low concentrations—just 1000 parts per million (ppm) can be lethal. In such cases, the primary risk is poisoning rather than explosion, which is why carbon monoxide is typically treated as a toxic gas rather than just a flammable one. According to Chinese regulations such as GBJ16-87 and GB5044-83, carbon monoxide is categorized as a class B gas with a wide flammability range, indicating a higher risk. Internationally, it is classified as a Class A gas due to its colorless and odorless nature, which makes it difficult for people to detect. Exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can lead to acute hypoxia and severe damage to the central nervous system. As per the international standard TJ36-79, carbon monoxide is considered a hazardous substance in workplace air, and according to GB5044-83, it is classified as a Class II toxic hazard. Therefore, it should be monitored as a toxic gas rather than just a flammable one. In summary, while some gases may be flammable, their toxicity must also be considered when determining how they should be detected and managed in different environments. Proper monitoring systems are essential to ensure worker safety and prevent both fire and health-related incidents.
