Kitchenware should be replaced regularly, and citizens who are purchasing kitchenware in the supermarket.
Kitchen utensils are essential items that we use daily, from sponges, cutting boards, non-stick pans, to range hoods and gas stoves. However, many people are unaware that these tools have a limited lifespan. Industry experts advise that using outdated kitchenware can pose serious health risks, making regular replacement and proper maintenance crucial for safety and hygiene.
Timely replacement of kitchenware is important to avoid hidden dangers. Recently, a reporter visited several large supermarkets in Gaomi City and found that kitchenware should be replaced regularly. Zhang Zong, a representative from Jiajiayue Supermarket, explained, “When a non-stick pan is heated above 260°C, it can release up to six types of toxic gases. If the non-stick coating is damaged, even at lower temperatures, harmful gases may be released. Therefore, if the coating is damaged, it should be replaced immediately.â€
He also mentioned that dishwashing brushes tend to lose bristles over time, creating grooves where bacteria can accumulate. These brushes should be replaced every two to three months. If the bristles start falling out or loosening, they should be discarded and replaced with new ones. Both wooden and plastic cutting boards need regular replacement. Even with cleaning, deep grooves can harbor bacteria, and once the board darkens or has deep knife marks, it should be thrown away. After each use, residue should be scraped off and rinsed thoroughly, and it’s best to rinse with hot water and expose it to sunlight for at least 30 minutes.
Range hoods should be professionally cleaned. According to China's national standards for household kitchen equipment, the life expectancy of a range hood is seven years. Over time, oil buildup inside the unit can produce harmful substances when heated. Zhang advised that professional cleaning is necessary for thorough maintenance. This includes removing internal components like the motor and fan blades to ensure safe operation.
In addition, the National Gas Cooker Safety Management Regulations state that artificial gas cookers should be replaced after six years of use, while oil and gas cookers should be retired after eight years. Old gas appliances not only malfunction due to wear but can also cause leaks, incomplete combustion, and excessive carbon monoxide in exhaust fumes. Zhang recommended that users regularly check for gas leaks and damage, and replace appliances once their service life is up.
Maintaining kitchen equipment properly is essential. Different parts require different care, especially since kitchenware is frequently exposed to water and heat. Even the best products can have a shortened lifespan without proper maintenance. The gas stove, for example, requires careful attention. It should be wiped down after each use to prevent dirt buildup. The distance between the stove and the window should be at least 30 cm to avoid wind blowing out the flame. The safe distance between the stove and the range hood or overhead cabinets should be 60 to 75 cm.
When maintaining or repairing the range hood, it should be unplugged to prevent electric shocks. The exterior should be wiped with a dry cloth and mild detergent. When the oil pan or cup is full, it should be emptied immediately to avoid spills. The fan blade and inner walls should be cleaned regularly with detergent. For range hoods with an oil filter, the filter should be cleaned every two weeks with detergent.
