Ultrasonic thickness gauge precautions and precautions

Correct selection of thickness probe

(1) When measuring curved workpieces, use curved probe jacket or small diameter probe (6 mm) to accurately measure curved materials such as pipes.

(2) For coarse-grained castings and austenitic stainless steels, use a coarse-grained special probe (2.5 MHz) with a lower frequency.

(3) When measuring high temperature workpieces, use high temperature special probe (300 °C ~ 600 °C), do not use ordinary probes.

(4) When the surface of the probe is scratched, it can be polished with 500# sandpaper to make it smooth and ensure parallelism. If it is still unstable, consider replacing the probe.

Processing the surface of the object

The surface is treated by sand, grinding, and frustration to reduce the roughness. At the same time, the oxide and paint layers can be removed to expose the metallic luster, so that the probe and the test object can achieve a good coupling effect through the coupling agent.

Correctly identify materials and choose the right speed of sound

Before measuring, be sure to find out which material is being tested and correctly preset the speed of sound. For high temperature workpieces, the thickness value is corrected according to the actual temperature, after the corrected sound speed is preset or after normal temperature measurement. This step is very important. In the field test, it is often wrong to ignore this influence, and if necessary, do a comparative test.

Proper use of couplant

First, select the appropriate type according to the application. The smooth material surface uses a low viscosity coupling agent; when the rough surface, the vertical surface and the top surface, a high viscosity coupling agent is used. High temperature couplings should be used for high temperature workpieces. Secondly, the coupling agent should be used in an appropriate amount and evenly applied. Generally, the coupling agent should be applied to the surface of the material to be tested, but when the measurement temperature is high, the coupling agent should be applied to the probe.

Special case handling

(1) When the test is found, the value is obviously deviated from the expected value, and the ultrasonic flaw detector is used for auxiliary judgment. When it is found that there are corrosion pits on the back side, the measurement of this area should be very careful. You can choose to change the angle of the split surface for multiple measurements.

(2) When measuring the workpiece with composite shape (such as the elbow of the pipe), it can be used to measure the thickness twice with the probe at one point. In the two thicknesses, the split faces of the probe should be 90° each other. The data is used as the thickness method of the workpiece at the measurement point.

(3) The other surface of the workpiece to be tested must be parallel to the surface to be measured. Otherwise, a satisfactory ultrasonic response will not be obtained, which will cause measurement error or no reading at all.

(4) For laminated materials, composite materials and internal structures, the commonly used ultrasonic reflection principle thickness gauge is not applicable.
