Swiss researchers are developing a revolutionary robot named Roombots, designed to reconfigure smart furniture and assist elderly individuals or those with limited mobility. Picture this: as night falls, the chair you're sitting on transforms into a cozy sofa. As you move through the room, the furniture intelligently rearranges itself to make space for you. Thanks to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), these futuristic ideas may soon become reality.
Roombots is an innovative project led by Ijspeert, director of the Bionics Lab. He explains, "Our lab is working on creating science-fiction-like smart furniture that can change shape and function. We envision Roombots being able to move and combine to form various pieces of furniture, such as tables, chairs, and more. The goal is to develop adaptable and reusable furniture that can evolve with user needs."
The Roombots are designed in a modular fashion, resembling small cube-shaped units. Each module contains a battery, three motors for movement and flipping, and a wireless connection. Measuring just 22 cm in length, only ten modules are needed to create a wide range of furniture. According to Egis Pilt, "Roombots will be combined with passive materials like tabletops or mats, enhancing their functionality."
These robots open up endless possibilities for interior design. For instance, the lights on the Roombots can be adjusted and arranged in different patterns. A group of Roombots can serve as a table, chair, sofa, or coffee table, adapting to your needs at any time. The team is also exploring how Roombots can specifically support the elderly—like automatically moving to their side or even helping them pour a glass of water. This technology could significantly improve the quality of life for many people, making homes more flexible and accessible.
