Swiss researchers are developing a groundbreaking robot called Roombots, designed to revolutionize smart furniture for the elderly and individuals with limited mobility. Roombots is an innovative system that allows furniture to change shape and function, offering greater flexibility and convenience. According to Ijspeert, director of the bionics lab, "We're building smart furniture from science fiction that can adapt and evolve. Roombots will be able to move, connect, and form different pieces like tables, chairs, and more. The goal is to create versatile, reusable furniture that enhances daily life."
Each Roombot module is cube-shaped, measuring 22 cm on each side, and equipped with a battery, three motors for movement and flipping, and wireless connectivity. Just ten modules are needed to assemble a wide range of furniture. As Egis Pilt explained, "Roombots will work with passive materials like tabletops or mats, making them adaptable and easy to use."
The possibilities are endless. Roombots can adjust lighting, rearrange themselves into different configurations, and even serve as a table, chair, or coffee table. Users could simply call for the desired furniture, and it would reconfigure itself accordingly. Beyond just convenience, the team is focusing on helping the elderly—like moving furniture closer to them or even assisting with simple tasks such as pouring water.
This technology has the potential to transform living spaces, making them more accessible, efficient, and responsive to individual needs. With ongoing development, Roombots could soon be a key part of future homes.
