Significant progress has been made in the research of mitochondrial pseudogenes

Recently, a research group led by researcher Yao Yonggang introduced from Kunming Institute of Zoology's "Hundred People Project" has collaborated with scholars at home and abroad to find that the mutation map in the mitochondrial pseudogene is very different from the actual mutation map of mitochondrial DNA. And through the analysis of the cases reported in the relevant literature, combined with the experimental data, it is shown that sufficient database query and phylogenetic analysis methods are very simple and effective for identifying mitochondrial pseudogenes. At the same time, they summarized relevant policies and measures on how to avoid and identify mitochondrial pseudogenes in the research.

The research results were recently published in the Journal of Medical Genetics, an internationally renowned journal with an impact factor of 5.535.

In the study of human mitochondrial diseases, how to effectively avoid the amplification of mitochondrial pseudogenes in nuclear DNA, and to identify and give correct interpretation of accidentally amplified pseudogene fragments is a difficult problem that has not been completely solved for more than a decade. In recent literature reports, there are many cases where mitochondrial pseudogene fragments are mistaken for real mitochondrial DNA.
