DuPont, in conjunction with the Her-Cules pulp and paper division, has developed chemical formulations for wet strength paper repulping that avoid landfill and incineration of wet strength paper. The chemical formulation developed was potassium monopersulfate, trade name Ky-break500.
This formulation is a completely chlorine-free chemical that can react quickly under conventional pulping conditions, reducing pulping time and increasing pulp yield.
Such chemicals are easier to control than chlorine-based preparations and can be used as a substitute for hypochlorite and can also reduce environmental pollution. Ky-break500 has the following advantages:
â— Does not produce AOX or other chlorine-containing organic compounds
â— Does not affect the use of wet end chemicals
â— Does not damage fiber properties
â— Does not darken the machine's color
â— No special transportation and storage equipment
