If you're looking for a taste of Singaporean art, the Majestic Hotel is a must-visit. This design space, created by a group of Asian artists, features bold and unconventional styles that reveal hidden surprises in every room. When it first opened, the hotel became a standout example of the sensational hotel industry in Singapore. Founded by Peng Loh, also the owner of Shanghai Water House and London Town Hall Hotel, he’s a passionate design chair enthusiast. The hotel is filled with iconic chairs from around the world, making it a paradise for design lovers. It’s not just about new aesthetics—it’s also a transformation of a century-old building into a creative stage. This approach to hotel design was already being practiced ten years ago by the New Majestic Hotel in Chinatown. Instead of hiring traditional interior designers, they brought together directors, painters, fashion designers, and furniture designers—nine Asian creatives who each designed 30 unique suites, each with its own distinct style. It was a groundbreaking moment in the design world. At the time, apart from a few cases of old house renovations, most hotels didn’t seek professional interior designers. Instead, they invited creatives from different fields to collaborate across disciplines. This move made waves in Singapore. Since its opening in 2006, the hotel has won over 10 awards, including the prestigious "Architectural Heritage Award" in Singapore. Avant-garde meets tradition in a Nanyang-style neighborhood. During the renovation, the team preserved the original appearance and structure of the building, reimagining it with a green and white color scheme. The first-floor space, once a commercial storefront, featured an arcade corridor—a unique architectural element common in tropical countries. The location of the Dahua Hotel used to be a quiet Nanyang-style neighborhood where wealthy Chinese businessmen would hide their mistresses. This three-story building features a balcony designed for the local climate, with carved railings that incorporate Eastern elements as decorative accents. (Photo credit: New Majestic Hotel)
