Klopf Architecture has the perfect interior design to transform a mid-century modern house.

San Francisco-based Klopf Architecture recently transformed a mid-century modern home originally built by Joseph Eichler, a renowned post-war developer who helped popularize modern housing in America. This project, located in Mountain View, California, is part of thousands of Eichler homes constructed between 1949 and 1966—often called "Eichlers."
With over 100 Eichler projects under their belt, Klopf Architecture specializes in restoring these iconic homes. “We’ve worked on everything from small remodels to full gut renovations,†says John Klopf, the firm’s principal. For this particular project, the goal was to update the home while preserving its original charm.
The Mountain View Double Gable Eichler renovation focused on opening up the kitchen and great room, expanding the master bathroom, and updating worn finishes. “Everyone loved the classic bones of this house, but it needed a major refresh inside and out,†the team explained. They replaced old siding with Western red cedar and used the same material for interior details.
The home spans 1,953 square feet and features three bedrooms, an office, and gabled roofs supported by wooden beams. A yellow-framed glass door leads to a landscaped atrium, with glazed walls offering views into the main living area. The team removed partitions to create an open kitchen, dining, and living space, keeping the original brick fireplace and adding a large island.
To expand the master suite, the closet was replaced with built-in wooden wardrobes. Throughout the home, walnut millwork contrasts with white walls, and grey porcelain tiles connect to concrete floors. “The continuity of materials enhances the sense of flow,†the architects said.
Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in natural light and connect the indoors with the outdoors. The backyard includes a custom fireplace and outdoor living area. Other mid-century modern projects include a Seattle home renovation by MW Works and the restoration of the Julius Shulman home by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects.
