San Francisco-based Klopf Architecture has transformed a mid-century modern home originally built by Joseph Eichler, a pioneer in post-war housing. This project, located in Mountain View, California, is one of many Eichler homes that have become iconic for their clean lines and open spaces. The firm, known for its expertise in these homes, has worked on over 100 Eichler properties, from small updates to complete renovations.
The renovation, titled "Mountain View Double Gable Eichler Remodel," focused on creating a more open and functional space. Key changes included removing walls between the kitchen and living areas, expanding the master bathroom, and updating worn finishes to create a more refined and modern environment. “Everyone loved the original structure, but it needed a fresh look both inside and out,†the team shared.
The home spans 1,953 square feet and features three bedrooms, an office, and a central gabled roof supported by wooden beams. The exterior was re-clad with western red cedar, a material also used in the interior to maintain a cohesive aesthetic. A yellow-framed glass door leads to a landscaped atrium, with glazed walls offering views into the main living area.
The open-plan layout includes a kitchen with an oversized island, cabinetry, and a retained brick fireplace. The master bedroom and bathroom were expanded by replacing a closet with built-in wardrobes. Throughout the home, walnut millwork and grey porcelain tiles add warmth and continuity, enhancing the sense of flow.
Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the space and connect the interior with the outdoors. The backyard features a custom-designed terrace with a large fireplace. Other notable mid-century projects include a Seattle home renovated by MW Works and the restoration of the Julius Shulman home by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects.
