A Texas native, Emily Mackie was always surrounded by beauty and creativity. Inspired by her environment, she moved to Chicago to study at the Illinois Institute of Art, where she earned a B.F.A. in Interior Design. From there, her career blossomed with an impressive portfolio of projects. In 2003, she found her passion in residential design, and by 2004, she launched her own luxury design firm, Inspired Interiors. This exclusive interview gives you a rare glimpse into her journey and vision.
Emily has built a company that empowers women to pursue their professional dreams while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As a mother of three, she’s mastered the art of juggling family and career with dedication and drive. Her passion for transforming spaces is clear when she says, “I love creating spaces that change people's lives.†She believes in the power of support and community, stating that with the right network, everyone can succeed.
Throughout her career, Emily has faced challenges head-on, always ready to solve problems and push forward. She says, “As someone with an endless desire to achieve, I will keep reaching new heights until the day I die.†Her drive and determination have helped her build a successful firm and a strong team.
When asked about her dream project, Emily laughed and said, “A client who doesn’t want any changes to the design.†She finds joy in seeing her vision come to life and knows her designs are successful when clients truly use and enjoy the space. For example, she recently designed a gentlemen’s lounge with a full bar, and the client later told her, “Every time we go out to dinner with friends, everyone comes back here to have drinks. It’s the neighborhood bar!â€
Emily and her studio strive to create unique, one-of-a-kind spaces that reflect each client’s personality. Currently working on multi-family buildings across the East Coast, she finds this type of project exciting because it allows her to give buildings a distinct identity. “It’s the opposite of residential design since we’re trying to attract people who want a specific vibe,†she explains.
“I don’t love talking about trends because they’re just passing fads. What works for people in their homes may not be trendy. Trends come and go, but designing for a personality is timeless.â€
– Emily Mackie
Emily values clients who are in their late 30s or older, looking for a custom-designed space that reflects their personality. She prefers clients who trust her vision and let her bring their home to life. “They don’t follow trends and want to do things their way,†she says. These relationships have helped her build a loyal client base who appreciate her creative approach.
Looking ahead, Emily is excited about the future of energy-efficient and self-sufficient homes. While she has many upcoming projects, she says, “It’s too early to share all the details.†One thing is certain—Emily Mackie continues to inspire with her innovative designs and passionate approach to interior design. Keep an eye on her next big move.
